Bargaining |
All market stalls and many small shops expect you to bargain. Offer a lower price than what you wish to pay. BUT if you enter the process and you settle you must buy the goods, it is not on to bargain away, obtain the lowest price and then leave. Be careful when you offer a low price as often what seems a huge discount is the price you end up agreeing. Try and enjoy the process and be fair to the seller as margins are often very low. |
Buddhas |
Buddha images must not be exported from Thailand whether old or new without a licence obtained from the Fine Arts Department and Ministry of Commerce. A shop might be able to obtain the licence, otherwise do not buy. The only exception are Buddha images that you can wear around your neck. |
Precious stones |
Chiang Mai is a good place to buy precious stones but watch out for fakes and scams. A reputable dealer will give a certificate of authority and if in doubt take your stone to the Chiang Mai University of Faculty of Geology for verification if you are worried.
