Chiang Mai is located in the North of Thailand. The city is fairly compact and the old city is surrounded by a moat. Chiang Mai is the centre for activites in the North of Thailand and the place to start treks into the surrounding jungles. Further north is the city of Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle.

Chiang Mai has always been an important trading post as a meeting pont between Burma, India and China.
